The first guest on this show was Dr. Derek Burkholder, research scientist at Save Our Seas Shark Center at Nova Southeastern University. Lori and Derek discussed shark threats and conservation and the recent news from CITES, which added protected status to more shark and ray species. Then, Tracy Coppola appeared to discuss the issues concerning tigers and big cats in private collections. Tracy is Campaign Officer with International Fund for Animal Welfare, IFAW. Detroit Tigers players were posing with a captive tiger cub as a promotion, and the discussion began with the concerns that raised.

Animals Today March 3, 2013 – Brenda Peterson and Bobbi Brink

This show featured two remarkable guests. First, novelist, investigative reporter and advocate for sea mammals, Brenda Peterson joined Lori. The use of extremely loud sonar by the US Navy not only disrupts the communication (and thus the behavior) of whales and dolphins, but can kill them. Clear evidence is accumulating that the exercises and tests using high intensity sonar are, indeed very bad for cetaceans. Brenda set forth the facts and a call for action. Then, Lori welcomed Bobbi Brink, Director and Founder of Lions, Tigers and Bears, an exotic animals sanctuary in Alpine California. They just rescued the bear, Meatball, who was behaving mischievously in the Glendale, California foothills. They discussed important issues in modern sanctuaries, the value in accreditation of sanctuaries, and the problems associated with big cat breeding and trade. Bobbi also discussed the Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act. In the days after the show, a tragedy occurred at a different California facility, Project Survival Cat Haven, and a volunteer, was killed by a lion. The lion was subsequently shot and killed. Animals Today March 18, 2012 Kim Sturla from Animal Place Sanctuary; Dr. John Pippin, Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act

This show featured the wonderful Kim Sturla who heads up Animal Place, near Sacramento. WOW, they recently rescued more than 4,000 hens. We discussed what one does with all those birds, and the value of farmed animal sancturaries.

Animals Today March 4, 2012 – On Location at Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary

On this week’s show, Peter ventured down to the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary in Texas to meet with Director Tim Ajax (and more than 500 monkeys). They discussed the history of the sanctuary, why it is needed, and how they are preparing to receive more than one hundred new residents. The sanctuary is closed to the public (listen and find out why), so this a rare behind the scenes look at a large working sanctuary. On this show, Lori first interviewed Susan Wagner, founder of Equine Advocates. Brought up in the racing industry, when Susan discovered the dark side of the horse business, she was shocked. Now, Susan is one of the country’s leading advocates for equines. They discussed politics, horse slaughter, responsible guardianship and more. Susan was simply brilliant. Bob is an experienced humane educator and Assistant D.A. in Los Los Angeles, prosecuting animal abuse and neglect cases.

Animals Today – Oct 23, 2011 Hoffman And Roberts

On this show we spoke with Frank Hoffman, from the Frank T and Mary L Hoffman Foundation. The Foundation hosts a very large series of websites concerning religion, animal rights and veganism. Frank is a former Jewish-United Methodist Pastor, who contends that traditional churches and temples do not take issues of animal welfare seriously. We had a wide-ranging and provocative discussion about religion, animal rights and the upcoming holidays. Make sure to visit him here.

Then, Adam Roberts joined us to discuss the massacre of dozens of wild animals on the streets of Zanesville Ohio. Adam is President of Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries and also executive vice president of Born Free USA.
