This show featured two great interviews. First, Dr. James Serpell joined Lori to discuss the medical problems common in purebred dogs. They discussed how breeding practices cause relatively high levels of genetic diseases in dogs, as well as the roles of kennel clubs, breeders, veterinarians and the general public concerning this issue. Dr. Serpell is Professor of Humane Ethics and Animal Welfare at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, where he also directs the Center for the Interaction of Animals and Society. Take a look at his professional information here. Also, although not discussed on the show, here is a description of research being conducted at UC Davis on genetic markers for diseases in various dog classes. With major funding provided by the AKC, we conclude they are looking for ways to continue maintaining breed lineages without introducing new genetic material from outside the breed.

Then, Lori welcomed attorney Dan Kinburn from Physicians Committee for Resposnible Medicine (PCRM). PCRM has a lawsuit against some of the biggest fast food and family restaurants. The basis of the lawsuit is the presence of proven carcinogens in grilled chicken served at these outlets and their failure to warn the public as required by law. Read about Dan here. And the news with Peter. Listen to the show here.

Brought up in the racing industry, when Susan discovered the dark side of the horse business, she was shocked. Now, Susan is one of the country’s leading advocates for equines. They discussed politics, horse slaughter, responsible guardianship and more. Susan was simply brilliant. Vist her site here and make sure to visit Equine Advocates Rescue and Sanctuary in Chatham New York. Then, Bob Ferber returned to give his perspective on the problems horses face in our country. Bob is an experienced humane educator and Assistant D.A. in Los Los Angeles, prosecuting animal abuse and neglect cases.

On this show, Lori first interviewed UCLA Law Professor Taimie Bryant. The California Hayden law, which she was responsible for drafting, has been successful in reducing the number of animals euthanized in shelters. However, it is now under attack by Governor Jerry Brown. No one knows this material better than Bryant. Listen in to hear what you can do to support this important law.

Then, Lori spoke with New York Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski about legislation he introduced to ban devocalization of companion animals. The bill is based on the highly succesful Massachusetts law and has good support so far. Zebrowski made a very strong and clear argument in favor if the bill. If you live in NY, make sure to contact your Assemblyperson or Senator on this one.

On this show, Lori interviewed attorney and animal advocate, Jenifer Wallis. They discussed the comprehensive dog population control legislation in place in New Hampshire. The effect has been to virtually cure the pet overpopulation problem in the state. Also, they discussed Jenifer’s experiences being vegan in Alabama. Note: There are not many vegans in Alabama, not yet. Jenifer works with Shelby Humane Society when she is not in her law office! Then, Peter interviewed Allie Phillips (another attorney) about her book, Defending the Defenseless – A Guide to Protecting and Advocating for Pets. We really enjoyed this one and highly recommend it for anyone who cares about dogs or cats. There are many specific tips and ideas for people of all ages. Buy it here on Amazon.

On today’s show, Lori began with a fascinating discussion about the use of gas for euthanasia of companion animals. Her guests were Pennsylvania State Senator Andy Dinniman, and animal advocate Joe Dwyer. Euthanasia by gas is very cruel and they are working to advance legislation (Daniel’s Law) to ban its use in the state. Looks like they will succeed. Senator Dinniman’s website is here. Also make sure to visit Joe Dwyer’s site, Daniel the Beagle, and learn more about what Daniel, who survived a gas chamber, and Joe are doing to end this inhumane practice and also to promote adoptions. (Joe is also an author and motivational speaker – check out his latest book, The Dog Ate My Homework.)

Then, Peter spoke with Gary Mansir, Co-owner of Camp Bow Wow Portland, Maine. This doggie daycare franchise was responsible for getting more than 100 dogs adopted into new homes in 2011. In fact, a big part of the business practice, from corporate to the individual franchises, is aimed at promoting adoptions. Maybe you’ll want to open a franchise after listening to Gary and Peter! Take a look at Camp Bow Wow Portland, and you can see all the action on the web cams, too.

Plus, some important news items with Peter. Listen to the show here.
