Whales are some of the most interesting creatures in the world. They are social beings just like us and they are just huge.
It is sad that most people are only able to see them in aquariums and zoos. In environments that they certainly do not belong to.
Most whales live and hunt with their families and being separated from them affects them psychologically. They adapt to their new environments, but their lifespan reduces drastically due to stress.
In the summer of 2018, we started hearing that there were almost 100 captured whales in a small Russian town close to the eastern coast of the country. Thanks to the local animal activists, the issue started getting some light and experts all around the world started to take action to solve this issue at once.
There were expected to be 75 beluga whales alongside with 10 orcas. Due to how bureaucracy can be slow sometimes, it took until May 2019 for American experts to go on to the site.
An unexpected surprise
When the experts arrived, they were welcomed with a surprise, the whales mentioned were captured by fishing companies and according to the Russian laws, the whales were basically those companies’ properties. And they had their own plans of selling these whales to theme parks in China.
Legally it seemed like nothing could be done. But the Russian activists managed to convince the court that what was happening was and should be illegal.
Whales released from Russian whale jail
Following this event, the first series of releases started in June 2019 with 8 belugas and 2 orcas. And the full release was completed in November 2019. The whales that were released were all healthy and there were only a couple of frostbites on them.
Releasing the whales is also a delicate process and they should be released in an area that is close to where they were first captured. Since these unfortunate fellows were separated from their families and groups, they had become dependent on their caretakers.
For scientific purposes, some of them were marked with satellite chips and almost all of the whales that were marked with those chips are currently hunting in groups. This gives us hope for other whales even though we do not have any recent information about them.
Hopefully, they are all safe and sound. As people, we should be as loud as we can about animals’ rights. Even though the recent PACT act was a move in the right direction, we still do not have any laws about protecting marine creatures.
Yes, it may be fun to look at them and feed them at parks, but they are certainly not their national habitats. We should stop capturing them for selfish reasons, let them be and enjoy scenes such as the following.
